LEAP’s Highlights from Ansys 2021 R2 Structures Release – Meshing

    Ansys 2021 R2 is here and with it comes a host of enhancements to Ansys Mechanical. Peter Brand, Specialist Application Engineer at LEAP has taken the time to go over some of these new features in a series of videos and in this first installment he looks at the improvements to meshing.     In the first clip Peter provides a brief introduction before diving in to take a closer look at the first enhancement, the Pull feature.

    Next Peter discusses the new ‘Protect Internal Edges’ feature when using Automatic Thin Sweep, a particularly useful tool when working with solid shell elements. Peter provides a short demonstration using a simple model to discuss the ways contact can be handled; via a normal 3D mesh (which can result in a very large model), using the mid-surface approach which requires special methods such as bonded contacts or weld elements to create the connections and finally, solid shell elements.

    In the following clip Peter takes a quick look at the new Mesh Freeze feature which is particularly handy when dealing with large models. The feature allows the user to freeze the mesh at part level meaning the frozen section/s of mesh will not be altered, even if performing a geometry update. Learn more in the clip below.

    And finally Peter takes a close look at the new features and enhancements added to the Batch Connection functionality within Ansys 2021 R2. Batch Connections enables meshing large beams and shell structures significantly faster with better quality mesh than the often tedious and time-consuming approach using shared topology.
