Simulation solutions for the space industry
50 years ago, the space race was essentially a two-horse race. 20 years ago, that number grew to the lower teens. In the 2020s, around every corner in Australia is a start up company competing for orbital real estate in low earth orbit and beyond. So how can these new enterprises compete against the establishment, when most aren’t state funded and don’t have the massive teams that was once afforded to the space race?
The answer lies in efficiency and automation in their design and engineering. While getting the right solution is still celebrated, these days a company’s success hinges more on the ability to deliver that answer in the quickest timeframe.
A multi-physics approach with simulation allows a nimble engineering team to (i) test virtually before you manufacture and break any prototypes, (ii) force engagements between multi-disciplinary teams in your early design stages and (iii) remove human design bias, to yield new ideas that may never have been thought of before.
LEAP supports both established and emerging companies in the space sector to adopt cutting-edge computer-aided engineering software to optimise the performance of key equipment: from cubesats, mission-critical electronics, communications systems through to full platforms.
LEAP’s software and expertise includes:
- Orbital Mechanics and Mission Planning software
- Multiphysics Simulation: Structural, Fatigue, Thermal, Aerodynamics, Antenna Placement, Electromagnetics incl. EMI/EMC
- Internet of Things & Digital Twins
- Augmented Reality for training, service & maintenance
- Product Lifecycle Management & Documentation
At AusSpace24 in Sydney, Thomas Benke from LEAP presented our guide to using virtual testing to thoroughly evaluate the performance and durability of space equipment across each part of their lifecycle, using existing MCAD and ECAD data and accurate mathematical models that account for the specific requirements and harsh environmental conditions of space.

Digital Mission Engineering Products
Systems Tool Kit (STK)
Provides an environment for analysing and visualising complex systems in the context of your mission. Interact with data from platforms across the aerospace, defense, telecommunications, and other industries. Simulate your intended missions and communicate the results with reports, graphs, and stunning 3D animations.
Orbit Determination Tool Kit (ODTK)
Processes tracking data and generates orbit ephemeris with realistic covariance. With ODTK, you can process a wide variety of traditional and non-traditional measurements using a state-of-the-art optimal sequential filter and matched smoother to generate orbits and realistic covariance.
Digital Mission Engineering Applications
Communications
Model complex, multidomain systems that incorporate your communications systems. Ensure that all your missions will have the communications they need to succeed. Evaluate configurations for your communications systems to optimise them. Arrange your assets where they give you the most while costing you the least.
